Our History

This craftsmen style farm house was built around 1918-1920. My father-in-law bought the house and the surrounding farm in 1941; three years later, he and his wife married. It was then 400 acres - a rather large farm for those days. A friend of his told him he would never see the far corners of it because it was so large. He and his wife raised four children here.

My wife and I, along with her brother and his wife, joined the farm operation in 1973 and formed a corporation. The barn was converted to a dairy barn and a dairy operation began.

Together our three families worked hard caring for the land and livestock, but we also prayed, dined, laughed and cried together. The Farm Crisis of the 1980’s forced the corporation to be dissolved and my brother-in-law and his family moved away.

With the encroachment of the City of Pella and developers, the land was eventually sold off in pieces. We did an extensive remodel of the house and opened the De Boerderij Bed & Breakfast in May of 2003.

The extended family holds many dear memories of the times spent on “The Farm”. We hope you will also develop wonderful memories during your stay with us.

In Loving Memory of All Those Who Have Gone Before -

Ron Bandstra, Owner De Boerderij
